Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
